Historical / Historical Fiction

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Hour and the Man, An Historical Romance

The Hour and the Man, An Historical Romance

Harriet Martineau

The nights of August are in Saint Domingo the hottest of the year. The winds then cease to befriend the panting inhabitants; and while the thermometer stands at 90 degrees, there is no steady breeze, as during the preceding months of summer. Light puffs of wind now and then fan the brow of the negro, and relieve for an instant the oppression of the European settler; but they are gone as soon as come, and seem only to have left the heat more intolerable than before.

Mr. Sponges Sporting Tour

Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour

Robert Smith Surtees

Historical / Victorian / Fiction

Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 – 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer, widely known as R. S. Surtees. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family.e left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks\' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge\'s Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. All Surtees\' novels were composed at Hamsterley Hall, where he wrote standing up at a desk, like Victor Hugo. In 1835, Surtees abandoned his legal practice and after inheriting Hamsterley Hall in 1838, devoted himself to hunting and shooting, meanwhile writing anonymously for his own pleasure. He was a friend and admirer of the great hunting man Ralph Lambton, who had his headquarters at Sedgefield County Durham, the \'Melton of the North\'. Surtees became Lord High Sheriff of Durham in 1856. He died in Brighton in 1864, and was buried in Ebchester church.

Her doting parents want her to make a good match with a worthy gentleman and live a respectable life. She is beautiful and intelligent and she comes with a hefty dowry. There is no reason that she shouldn’t be able to find an eligible man and settle down.Tessa herself is the reason. The men who are attempting to court her are, in her opinion, boring and conceited. Not only that, Tessa craves excitement and adventure, of which there is little in her social circles. By chance, she comes across an advertisement for a bride brokerage company seeking eligible women of good breeding to go west and find husbands. One man on the list catches her eye and she begins corresponding with him, eventually agreeing to go to Montana to meet him. Tessa makes a successful escape and sets out to make a new life in Montana.Dean Samuels is a Montana rancher who is in over his head. His ranch is struggling and his two children are unruly and in need of a caretaker. It’s clear to his younger brother, Marcus, that he needs help. He tells Dean about a mail order bride service and convinces him that he should utilize it to find a wife. After his wife, Sarah, had passed away, Dean never intended to marry again. His ranch and his children became his life. However, it becomes apparent that Sadie, his daughter, and his son, Jack, need stability and love. The demands of raising his children and keeping his head above water financially have taken a toll and Dean grudgingly gives in to Marcus’ idea.Sarah had been the love of his life and Dean doesn’t intend to let any other woman into his heart. He’s locked those kinds of emotions deep inside, not wanting to take the chance of getting hurt like that again. Because Dean has trouble expressing his feelings in writing, his younger brother Marcus agrees to help write the letters to Tessa. Dean is happy to leave that part up to him. When Dean and Tessa meet, sparks fly between the two strong willed people. Tessa is disappointed that Dean isn’t the romantic, sophisticated man she was lead to believe he was in the letters she received. Dean is aggravated that she isn’t a meek woman who is easily managed. Never mind the fact that she has no idea of how to take care of children and keep a home.Dean and Tessa struggle to find common ground and make their marriage work. Will they each take the risk and open their hearts to one another? Can their marriage survive and will they find love and contentment in each other? Edward - Interactive

Mike Voyce

Historical / Historical Fiction

What is Past and what is Present? Edward came to light in 1990 and changed my life; the events around Edward happened in the 1480s and 1490s. Can the Past change the Present, or the other way around? This book's truth, with pains-taking detail, of both then and now, may provoke. Edward could have ended Tudor tyranny with the cup, the sword and druid glass. Let's end that tyranny over the present. If you’re very clever, and very lucky, you will learn from the practice of Law, sometimes even in the court itself, that the Truth is subjective. The truth of a novel is also subjective and, exactly as with a just and winning case, the truth of a great novel will stay with you and change your life. In Edward I have played with the Truth; taking exact and accurate facts to tell a particular story, which for 500 years was obscured from History. Here you will not find internal inconsistency or lapses of plot. Reviewers like it; but, if all I wanted was popularity I would not have told a story from the Life. The power of Edward bends Reality such that further doors have been opened, through 2 websites and numerous hyperlinks they have been opened for you.In the latest edition of Edward I have played with this access to Reality, through more than 60 hyperlinks, including 2 dedicated video links, you can explore issues surrounding Edward; from the recorded history of characters around him to the legend of the Holy Grail, from present day places to the sound of medieval music, even spirit guides. The interactive edition of Edward is revolutionary; it should change the nature of eBooks, and for that reason I’m now giving it away free. Beyond Edward itself, I wish to demonstrate what can be done with eBooks, simple principles which could be used by any writer or publisher. Download it soon, for there will come a time when the point of my humble innovation will have been made, and I shall impose a charge.Edward was the heir to the duke of Buckingham, the rightful heir to the throne, on the run for his life from Richard III at the age of 5, and hardly safer under the new king; but what of that dangerous woman the King’s mother, Eadie whom he loved and Alainore whom he would be forced to marry? For more of his story, or for that of the author, a senior partner in a Law firm, locked in unravelling what happened 500 years ago, you can see the description of the original edition (still available at Smashwords) or Google Mike Voyce.

Tuesday's Caddie

Tuesday's Caddie

Jack Waddell

Historical

It’s 1930 when immigrant caddie Conor O’Reilly falls in love with Hollywood screenwriter Annie Burke. Saddled with a hateful husband, she finds in Conor her one true love. He suddenly finds a way to be worthy of her. Fate frees her and then tears them apart. Fortunes reverse and decades later they meet again, a secret binding them. When they do, one must decide if their love should live once more.Deemed “a story of great sweetness and sadness and lots of fun along the way” and “an exceptional read” by a judge in the Writer’s Digest Self-Published ebook Awards, Tuesday’s Caddie is painted against a rich backdrop of Depression era Hollywood and the exclusive Biarritz Country Club where poor caddies and wealthy members work and play together yet inhabit separate worlds..Into this world walks young Conor O’Reilly. An Irish immigrant whose small cafe failed in the crash of ’29, he still burns to make his mark and become one of the elite he now serves. He soon meets beautiful Annie Burke, wife of noted screenwriter Franklin Burke, whose marriage is but a sham. Despite their vastly different lives and backgrounds, Conor and Annie fall in love as he caddies for her each Tuesday on Ladies’ Day.Out of the blue Conor is offered a chance to make real money when he’s enlisted to play in the annual Biarritz Calcutta golf tournament where fabulous sums of money are wagered on two-man teams. His partner is Billy Compton, a rich playboy with a penchant for getting into trouble. Their adventures together almost cost them their chance before the event. It’s at the Calcutta tournament where fate and fortunes good and ill all collide. Conor and Annie’s story is interrupted for decades until fate again brings them together with truths to be reckoned with. The book is replete with vibrant portrayals of the places and the people of the times. From the grandeur of Hollywood mansions and the life of the rich to the squalor and wantonness of Tijuana during prohibition, the era in captured in vivid detail. But, in the end, Tuesday’s Caddie is a story of enduring love and painful loss, the attainment of dreams and the rejection of dreams gone wrong. It is about love that lasts a lifetime and beyond.
